• Wall and floor installations share most of the tools and equipment; however there are some special tools that are needed for each of these applications. Tools and necessary equipment Many of you have already attended training courses that are offered by tile and thin-set manu- facturers and also by our industry. That is commendable. I strongly encourage you to do thorough research on the required tools. Also order the tools early so you have sufficient time to practice before the installation begins. Here is a list of tools and equip- ment needed for floor installation in addition to standard tools: • Personal protection equipment (PPE) such as cut-proof gloves and safety glasses • Table that is at least 6’ x 12’, well-designed and sturdy • Rail-cutter – 12’ is very accurate • EZ-Breaker to split the tile after scoring • Pressure pliers/snap cutters for breaking scored panel • Aluminum frame with adjust- able suction cups designed for rough and smooth surfaces • Trowels including special notch that provides maximum mor- tar coverage • A-frame and transporter • Set of sawhorses • Drill guide system with water • Diamond-tipped hole saw • Four-sided diamond pad • Corner protectors • Removable lippage control sys- tem • Orbital sander with soft pad Add these tools for wall installa- tion in addition to the above list: • Scissor lift attachment, designed to attach frame with suction cups for lifting tiles for multiple TECH TALK –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Moving the tile in a large staging area.
