recreational activities, books and sup- plies, student organizations, and a liv- ing allowance while students are learn- ing a trade. There are 125 Job Corps centers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. It takes 8-24 months to complete Job Corps career trainings and costs par- ents nothing to send income-eligible students to Job Corps. Sixty thousand young people benefit from the program each year, and full-time job placement after graduation is 82.3%. Construction is among the 11 career tracks students can study. This program was initiated during the Johnson administration as part of the Economic Opportunity Act in 1964, and developed by Sargent Shriver, based on the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps of the 30s. I invite you to visit www.jobcorps.gov and explore the site, and then do what you can to pass on this information. Maybe it’s spreading the word by coor- dinating a presentation in your church, community center, or schools to let young people from disadvantaged back- grounds know it’s available. If you are a company that is seeking employees, consider Job Corps graduates. Equipping young people for a viable career that they can be proud of and excel in both professionally and finan- cially supports trades. It also helps the country and the industry as a whole and of course, helps students indi- vidually. See how you might spread this information today. And thank you Kurt for bringing this program to our attention!
