Mortar Beds Lastly, learners are taught the basics of mortar beds, applicable TCNA Handbook details, mixing ratios, tools needed, and admix- tures. This course is not meant to teach someone how to properly install a mortar bed but to explain what it is, why it is used, and what the role of an apprentice or helper is when the installer is working on a mortar bed. Each of these courses were designed to give a basic under- standing of what someone new to the job could see a tile setter installing. There are more advanced courses available for each of these subjects. They can be found in the 6 – 12 month Apprenticeship courses.
