As we move into the dog days of summer and everyone is busy, you still need to think about training new employees. Even though you have been on the job a long time and know a lot about installing tile, offering a new hire some third-par- ty training will give you more time for on-the-job training – and you may also remember or learn some- thing new. We all tend to pick up bad habits, but why pass those on to someone new to the industry? Today, I wanted to discuss three more courses that are available on NTCA University. They are intro- ductory courses for Waterproof Membranes, Crack-Isolation Membranes, and Mortar Beds. Each of these courses is part of the Apprentice 0 – 6 month courses. Waterproof Membranes In this course, the learner is introduced to the different types of waterproof membranes, shower pans, and why tile work should be protected from other trades. Even though this is an introductory course, it goes into details about ANSI standards, shower-drain con- struction, reasons for flood test- ing shower pans, understanding the limitations of the membrane that you are using, and why it is important to follow manufacturer instructions. Crack-Isolation Membranes Similar to the previous course, types of crack-isolation mem- branes, types of cracks, and the TCNA Handbook EJ 171 method are introduced. We discuss the sizes and types of cracks that crack-isolation membranes may be used to cover, the proper way to install crack-isolation membranes, and what you should do when you find a structural vertical crack.
