The three factories collaborated in a synergy that increases efficiency. When the economic crisis hit Italy in 2009, the Italian market kept reducing dramatically every year until 2015. As part of the recovery, an even stronger push on exports and innovation became key. In the following years, “Del Conca Fast” was introduced, a system for the dry installation of porcelain tiles (without thinset), as well as “DUE2” 2 cm thick porce- lain pavers. Since the USA had been a strong market for Del Conca since the early ‘90s, Del Conca USA started production in Loudon,Tenn., in March 2014, with a huge invest- ment of more than $50M. The factory was constructed in only 10 months from foundation to pro- duction. This rapid pace of devel- opment made Enzo even more passionate about the notoriously slow Italian administration that hampered Del Conca’s expansion in many ways in the past. In a visionary statement, at the end of 2015, he said, “Let’s dou- ble the output” – planned for 2017-2018. The new line will start before the end of 2016, bringing DCUSA production from 32M sq. ft./year to 65M sq. ft./year. In the meantime, Enzo also planned a huge investment in the Pastorelli plant in Italy, adding 50M sq. ft./year capacity and the latest technology to produce big sizes and slabs (see news item in the October 2016 TileLetter). The work is currently under way and the expanded plant will be opera- tional in the spring of 2017. Although Enzo will not enjoy these great new additions to the group, his family will carry on the company success – his wife Stefania and three sons, Paolo, Davide and Marco, who are in the business. In addition to manufacturing, he was active in cultural activities, like the Cino Mularoni Foundation that promotes knowledge of tradi- tional ceramics from San Marino. He also liked participating in bik- ing, skiing, sailing and sponsoring sports such as the Italian nation- al Soccer team, and Moto2 and Moto3 Gresini Motorcycle Racing team. All projects are under way as scheduled. He left a healthy and dynamic Group, but especially values of doing business correctly and with respect. 118 TileLetter | December 2016
