for conducting visual inspection of finished tilework. Contractors will be able to point to these new guidelines when communicating with their clients so they know what to expect of the final instal- lation and how to perform a rea- sonable inspection of the finished work. While most tile contractors strive to achieve 100% accuracy and quality in every installation, small issues do occur. After all, these are hand-crafted installations with many variables to consider and pieces to assemble. There are rea- sonable allowances for variation. When I receive the next question about a tiny chip or perceived flaw in an installation I can refer to the new language in the 2017 TCNA Handbook to form my response. And so can you. For the next question I receive about viewing a tile installa- tion, I can now point contractors and installers to the new “Visual Inspection of Tilework” section in the 2017 TCNA Handbook. When it is an owner or owner’s repre- sentative that calls, the Handbook backs up my comments about leaving the halogen lights in the garage and use only permanently- installed lighting and to not get down on their hands and knees with grandpa’s magnifying glass but to view the installation from 60” or normal standing height from floors or 36” from walls. Thank you, TCNA. We have a great industry with massive support for the installa- tion contractor who is informed, stays updated and actually uses the standards and best practices found in ANSI A108 / A118 (and others), TCNA Handbook, NTCA Reference Manual and manufac- turer’s instructions. As one of the many value added benefits of membership in their professional association, NTCA members receive the TCNA Handbook and NTCA Reference Manual automatically every time they are published.
