He’s been installing tiled showers for more than 30 years. We sat down with Clyde to ask him what he thought of the USG Durock™ Brand Shower System. OVERALL, WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF THE SYSTEM? It’s definitely one of the simplest and most cost effective systems to install. The fabric is thinner, but somehow it’s actually stronger as far as puncturing or tearing. Plus, when you overlap it, the buildup is minimized significantly. The pre-sloped trays have the same pitch we use when doing a mud floor, unlike a hard pitch used by some other manufacturers. As far as the foam board goes, it doesn’t need special fasteners and has excellent pull-through strength. It’s lightweight but ridiculously rigid, and either side can be used for setting tile. I also like that the drains can be thinset and attached to the tray versus others that just sort of float. And the blue plastic retaining ring only adds to its strength. HAVE YOU ORDERED AND INSTALLED A CUSTOM SHOWER TRAY? Actually, a large number of the trays we use are custom ordered. If you can measure, you can order a tray. It’s a huge advantage. In fact, right now we’re working on a shower that required a 72 inch by 54 inch tray. Our custom tray fit beautifully and was much easier than carrying mud up flights of stairs and adding 300 pounds to the shower floor. HAVE YOU INSTALLED A BARRIER-FREE SHOWER USING THE SYSTEM? I have and, with the tray being only an inch think, it’s incredibly easy. We just lower the subfloor between the floor joists so that they are even. We can then use 1/4" USG Durock® Brand Cement Board for the rest of the floor and cover it with fabric for a waterproof installation. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE PROFESSIONAL AND DESIGNER GRATES? The grates are stunning. They’re super sturdy in addition to being gorgeous. The grates drain well and there are no screws to get filled with grout or anything else after installation. If a customer changes their fixtures to a different color, the drain pops right out and a new one drops right in. It’s fantastic.
