I am truly honored and will never be able to properly express my appreciation. Many years ago after an NTCA work- shop my good friend Leigh Hightower and I were brainstorming ways to solve all the industrys problems. Leigh came up with the concept that we were a bridge between the old ways of install- ing tile mud floors and walls and the new ways thin-set mortar and mastic. This was so important to understand both worlds bring them together and educate the old generation as well as the new. Some of the early bridge builders included Tom Vaughn Tom Cassutt Eric Edelmeyer and others. NTCA provided the venue tradeshows and the vehicle traveling workshops to facilitate this. We would never have succeeded without the association recognizing and respond- ing to those needs. The traveling work- shop went all over the country exposing contractors and distributors to many new products systems and techniques. Looking back to my first NTCA trade show in 1976 which included 60 exhib- itors and comparing that to Coverings this year is incredible. Historically I believe there were five very significant and innovative products that changed the industry from the installation mate- rials side. These product inventions set the stage for massive growth in the tile and stone industry. These are not in order of preference or influence. The invention of latex-modified thin- set mortar.
